Root canal or endodontic treatment is used to save and restore severely infected teeth which would have previously required extraction. Endodontic treatment is required when an infection occurs in the pulp of the tooth, which is where the nutrients and nerves are housed that facilitate the tooths growth and development. As a consequence of the nature of this infection it is notoriously painful, requiring efficient treatment.
Root canal therapy involves the removal of the infected pulp from a tooth. Following the completion of the treatment the area is then sterilised and sealed with a white filling to prevent any recurrence of infection and leave your tooth with its original strength, function and a natural appearance. Depending on the severity of the damage a dental crown may be placed over the top, which enhances the strength, durability and appearance of the tooth.
